*Please note that from Thursday, October 4th the East Oxford Drop-in will run at its new time of 12:30-2:30pm

Please aim to arrive about 10 minutes in advance of the start of the session so that we can greet you, introduce you to other staff and familiarise you with the Drop-in setup.

You will be there primarily as an observer, not as a member of staff. In the community Drop-ins, the facilitator is the only one who is insured to give information and breastfeeding support. We also use volunteers who are breastfeeding/former breastfeeding mothers who have used the service and been trained by us, or who are accredited breastfeeding counsellors with one of the lay organisations, or who are certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs). They work under the supervision and direction of the session facilitator. The facilitator may ask you to assist a particular mother, e.g. with positioning and attachment, or information about milk expression, or to talk to a pregnant woman. Apart from this, you are very welcome to chat to all the visitors; they usually appreciate the opportunity to talk about the care they've received and their birth and breastfeeding stories.

Note for Student Midwives

Unlike the hospital breastfeeding drop-ins, women and their supporters can come at any stage of pregnancy or lactation, or post-weaning, if they want to debrief their breastfeeding experience. This means that there is a much wider range of baby ages, including many who are well beyond the midwifery remit; for example parents often come for information about starting solid foods or returning to work.  If you would like to extend your learning to include breastfeeding beyond the early weeks, you might find our Recommended Resources useful. We share this with parents at our Drop-ins, marking items that we think would be useful specifically for them.
